Water Works Supply Co., Inc.

Our History

Water Works Supply Co., Inc. (WWSC) was established in 1953 when 3 employees of Sunset Engineering of Riverdale, N.J. bought the water works division of that company.  They were Jack H. Schmutz, Jack Lanthier, and Len LaBeur.  The original name was Sunset Supply Co., which was changed to its current name in 1954.

The wholesale distribution company capitalized on the post war housing boom that was taking place in N.J. and the lower Hudson Valley.  Its focus was to provide excellent products at a fair price which was backed by the best service in the industry.  Those qualities still drive the company today.

While the ownership of the company has changed several times since 1953, a member of the Schmutz family has always directed the firm.  Jack H. Schmutz was with the company from its inception until 1985.  Jack G. (Greg) Schmutz was with the company from 1978 until 1990.  He went on to become an NHRA drag racer and national champion until his death in 2009.  James C. Schmutz started with the company in 1979.  He was elected president in 1984, a position he still holds today.

In anticipation of its planned strategic growth, WWSC added a corporate controller, a sales V.P., and an operations manager in 1989.  The company's headquarters and north Jersey branch is still in its original location in Pompton Plains, N.J. today.  The company opened a full service sales office, warehouse and yard in Farmingdale, N.J. in 1986.  This was done to better service its ever growing customer base in central N.J.  That branch continues to operate in its original location today.

In response to an increase demand in southern N.J., the company  opened another full service sales office, warehouse and yard in 2004 in Hammonton, N.J.  That branch moved to its present location in 2012 and is geographically situated to handle the growth of the Atlantic City - Philadelphia corridor.

In 1996, the company hired a water meter and backflow prevention specialist to handle the ever changing complexities of that segment of our industry.  That individual covers our entire service area, and is equipped with his own product demo / service vehicle.

In 2015, WWSC hired a regional fusible HDPE specialist to sell and service that growing market segment of our industry.  In addition to N.J, his market area will include Staten Island, lower N.Y. state, northern Deleware, and eastern P.A.  Our branch network is ideally situated to service projects in this region.

WWSC was a charter member of WASDA, as well as a member of UTCA and the N.J. Water Association.  We support, through individual membership, AWWA, North Jersey Water Conference, and South Jersey Water Professionals Association, serving as officers in several.

WWSC has partnered with some of the best manufacturers in the industry, distributing the best product mix available, and providing the best possible service.  Our service is evidenced by our employees.  Our management team averages over 25 years with the company.  Likewise, the majority of our sales professionals have been with the company between 15 and 25 years.  We constantly provide our staff with continual industry training and also offer tuition reimbursement for all employees who wish to expand their horizons.

WWSC has seen 12 different U.S. presidents in its history, and survived both recessions and wars.  We believe we are living the American Dream.  We believe sound business principles never go out of style and we look forward to celebrating our 65th anniversary.
